Pegasus CMO Receives Health Care Provider of the Year Award

Pegasus Emergency Group congratulates its chief medical officer, Dr. Neil Schamban, as recipient of the Health Care Provider of the Year award by the Cullman County Chamber of Commerce in Cullman, AL. The award was presented on October 28 at the 2nd Annual Health Care Professional of the Year Award ceremony by Lindsey Dossey, public relations coordinator for Cullman Regional Medical Center. The event recognized individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to health care in the Cullman community.

Dr. Schamban was nominated by Cullman Regional Medical Center (CRMC), where he is chair of the Emergency Medicine department. "Dr. Schamban has improved ED patient satisfaction to the highest level in a decade," said CRMC chief executive officer Jim Weidner. "He has raised the bar for all other EDs in Alabama for quality outcomes and patient satisfaction, making CRMC one of the top EDs staffed by Pegasus Emergency Group."

Since assuming management of the CRMC Emergency Department in April 2008, Pegasus Emergency Group, with Dr. Schamban's leadership, has successfully recruited board-certified, residency-trained Emergency Medicine physicians to staff the CRMC ED, as well as reduced patient length of stay times to best-in-class levels.

"Clinically, Dr. Schamban is double-boarded in Pediatric and Adult Emergency Medicine, a rarity to find an EM physician of this caliber in a hospital of our size," said Mr. Weidner. "He even supported the building of our new ED with a $100,000 contribution from his physician group, Pegasus, and even assisted in the new design. Dr. Schamban has made a significant contribution to the leadership of our medical staff."

Nomination criteria were that the nominee should stand out for his or her diligence, dedication, leadership, outcomes, and their overall provision of patient care, all of which Dr. Schamban has met and exceeded in his time at CRMC.

"Dr. Schamban is respected by the staff because he has done an excellent job, is committed, caring, knowledgeable, will to get in there and work, and is always challenging us to be better," said Cheryl Baily, chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services. "He has made a positive difference for CRMC and the community."

Cullman Regional Medical Center is one of 7 Alabama EDs staffed by Pegasus physicians. Others include Coosa Valley Regional Medical Center, Gadsden Regional Medical Center, Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Walker Baptist Medical Center, Citizens Baptist Medical Center, and Medical Center Enterprise. All of these EDs have seen similar outcomes to those at CRMC, and Pegasus looks forward to helping all of these facilities further pursue their commitment to their patients and community.
